About The Mayor

Adi Eldar, Mayor of Karmiel, Chairman of the Union of Local Authorities in Israel.
Adi spent his high school years in “Kfar Hayarok”, where he also began his social activities. In addition to his studies he served as chairman of the farm committee and farm coordinator, cadet and group leader in the “Mahane Olim” Youth Movement and organized a nuclear group for the Misgav Am Kibbutz in the Upper Galilee.
In 1962 Adi enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), serving in the Nahal. After his Army service he remained in Kibbutz Misgav Am where he filled a number of positions in the field of education – educational coordinator for youth until their enlistment in the IDF, organization and guidance of youth groups and chairman of the Kibbutz Cultural Committee.
In 1973 Eldar moved to Karmiel with his family. Here he served as Director of the Municipal Education Department (then a Local Council) for 13 years. , 3 years also as Director of the Community Center
In 1986 Adi was appointed as Consultant to the Minister of Education,Yitzhak Navon, and was responsible for the following areas: connections with the Parliament, the field of Education and Culture, the Building and Development Section, the Cultural Section, Arabs and Druze, the Community Center Association, Development and Boarder Towns and funds form the General Conservator.
  • 1989 - Eldar was first elected Mayor of Karmiel.
  • 1991 – Eldar was elected to a second term with 82%of the vote.
  • 1994 - Elected Chairman of the Union of Local Authorities.
  • 1994 Received the Kaplan Prize for excellence in the absorption of new immigrants in Karmiel.
  • Since 1995 he has received the prize for fiscal management in the Municipality of Karmiel every year.
  • 1998 Elected to a third term as Mayor of Karmiel.
  • 2003 Elected to a fourth term as Mayor of Karmiel with 80%
